Weather Impacts & Advice
Weather Impacts & Advice data are defined as derived environmental data, based on outputs from Observations and/or Predictions & Post Processed data, often produced following human intervention or through managed data interpretation automations for the purpose of providing insight on current and near future weather to forecast customers.
Examples include output from the Guidance Unit such as a warning, output from the Operations Centre such as a regional script, Contextual Data such as TAFs from other front-line production teams.
Examples where Weather Impacts and Advice data are produced via full automation include assessments of the likelihood of severe weather, nowcasting, situational awareness data, tropical cyclone tracks and weather impacts, generally designed for use by specialist meteorologists.
Environmental Data
Environmental Data describes past, current, or future states of the Earth's surface, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. This includes observations data, predictions & post processed data; weather impacts and advice data; research data and all associated reference data.

Observations
Observations data are defined as measurements of the physical, chemical and/or biological environment, measured at a specific time in the past. They may be direct or indirect measurements and may be feature or coverage data. In order to be valid, observations data must carry geospatial and temporal metadata as well as variable values (or equivalent such as pixel values for a faster coverage).

Predictions and Post Processed data are defined as data that infers a full coverage of the state of the physical, chemical and/or biological environment within a given domain and specific context. This includes data assimilation analysis, projections and predictions to different times and post processed outputs derived from predictions. Data are produced using automated production typically in large volumes controlled by algorithms and data science. Prediction data can take many forms, but they always have a Geospatial Feature, Coverage or native grids on creation. They may be packaged differently for supply for customer requirement.

Reference data are defined as contextual information, commonly used to specify, interpret or analyse other environmental data types. Examples include geographic locations, areas of interest such as flight information regions, time zones and definitions of controlled terms used for data.

Research
Research data are defined as derived data based on Observations data, Predictions & Post Processed data, Reference data, Weather Impacts & Advice data and other data sources. This may be numerical analysis data, visualisation artifacts, papers, contextual analyses and consultancy outputs that support the delivery and reporting of activities across the scientific domain, but excluding the time critical Weather Impacts and Advice data.
